Handel Messiah
Throughout his long life, Handel demonstrated genius not only as a composer, but also as a shrewd musical entrepreneur, cleverly adapting to the tastes of his audiences. When he realised that the vogue for Italian opera had waned, he single-handedly created the English oratorio with huge success. Although Messiah was enthusiastically received when first performed in Dublin, strangely its London premiere bombed. Handel though, confident of its worth, bided his time until ultimately it had become his iconic work. Stephen Layton, ‘one of the world’s finest interpreters of choral music’ (Classic FM Magazine), holds the accolade of conducting the ‘Best Messiah Recording’ in BBC Radio 3’s Building a Library series. He’s joined by the Hallé Choir and a quartet of British soloists at the top of their game.

'My Songs Are My Diary': Discovering Josephine Lang
The career of Josephine Lang, a largely-forgotten nineteenth-century singer, pianist and composer, was constrained by the societal limitations of her time. This ‘portrait in music’ traces her life and gives voice to her music through her letters and songs, as well as music by Johannes Brahms and her friend and mentor Felix Mendelssohn.

SongPath at Oxford International Song Festival
Presented in association with Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum; the Humanities Cultural Programme Everything is Connected season; and Oxfordshire Mind. Supported by Oxford City Council Community Impact Fund
SongPath is a unique blend of nature, music and wellbeing, now established as an essential, uplifting element of the Festival. This year, for the first time, we head to the magical Harcourt Arboretum, one of the UK’s most important woodland areas that is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Walk among the trees, experience great music, conversation and a closeness to the healing power of nature, led by singers and SongPath founders Jess Dandy and Joanna Harries. They'll be joined by guest musician Vahid Taremi, a notable figure in the world of Persian music and an virtuosic performer on the shurangiz and setar, and Phil Muil, an expert in taijiquan (tai chi) and qigong, to help us shake off the cobwebs under the leaves.
